It may seem like a waste of money if you don’t get robbed / injured / ill but it’s a seriously bad idea to go and work abroad without insurance. The costs of foreign healthcare can be astronomical so it’s got to be a good investment to get decent cover. Check first with your employer to see if they provide you with any cover so you're not paying for what you don't need
Here are a few things to bear in mind when looking at an insurance policy:
Make sure they cover you for injuries caused at work abroad and cover you for the particular type of job(s) you’re going to do.
Make sure you’re adequately covered for dangerous sports if you’re going to be doing them.
Check that they’ll fly you home if needs be.
If you have asthma or any other ongoing illness a lot of insurers won’t include this in their policy, so double-check if you think it may be an issue.
If you extend your stay abroad make sure you extend your cover. An easy thing to forget but it could cost you a fortune if you then have an accident.
I know it won’t make much difference to tell you but if you injure yourself when you’re completely trollied chances are you won’t be covered either.
